KNITTING IS OFFICIALLY HIP. From
grade school students to twenty-somethings and sixty-somethings,
including celebrities like Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Sarah
Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz, Kelly Ripa, Kristen Davis, Isaac
Mizrahi, Dakota Fanning and David Arquette, knitting has become
the drug of choice among the masses and Hollywood's elite alike.
Plugged on Oprah, Isaac Mizrahi Show, Good Day Live and Sex
and the City, knitting offers a soothing, personal touch in a
stressful, overly informed, impersonal world. A true testament
to the increasing, widespread popularity of the craft is the slang
and buzzwords that are springing up around it, like "K.I.P."
To K.I.P. is to Knit In Public, and more and more people become
K.I.P's (Knitters In Public) each day. The popularity of knitting
is partly being driven by the fact that you can do it anywhere.
It's easy to learn, and is comprised of only two stitches: knit
and purl. Any pattern is ultimately just a combination of those
two stitches, making it both an appealing, relaxing, challenging
and fulfilling craft.
On 3/19 and 3/20 alone, The New York Times published two in
depth articles on knitting, knitting camps and knitting cruises.
At least 75 articles on knitting have been printed in the New
York Times since 9/11. Even the Barnes and Noble Book chain has
had knitting book signings and knitting groups to teach knitting.
Currently there is a reported 57% increase in knitters under the
age of 35. Knitting Clubs, classes and trendy knitting books of
patterns are popping up consistently especially with the resurgence
of ponchos and scarves.
